Note Given that so many ‘classic’ grounds in the surrounding area are included in Kerry Miller’s seminal History of Non League Football Grounds (1996) the omission of Stanley United’s Hill Top Ground appears an astonishing oversight. The name and address provide a clue at what to expect, although the ground is not as high or windswept as its near neighbour at Tow Law. However, the presence of an old house on the near touchline, that serves as the dressing rooms and clubhouse, is quite unique. A further area of cover stands opposite, whilst horses graze on the grass bank behind the near goal. A wonderfully evocative venue, although sadly not in use by any senior clubs at the time of writing (November 2006). As Peter Miles notes: “a beguiling ‘must-do’ venue” and I am delighted to have ticked it off my list! DB
