Hailsham Town v Eastbourne Town. Sussex County League Division One, 3 January 2005, The Beaconsfield. Score 1-3, Attendance 291.
Although almost ten miles outside Eastbourne, Hailsham’s fixtures against the senior Eastbourne clubs (now three, since the amalgamation between United and Shinewater Association) have always attracted some fierce local rivalry, as evidenced by the decent BH attendance on this occasion. With both clubs precariously near the relegation zone, points were at a premium and Eastbourne (in their change colours of red/blue) took all three quite comfortably. The Beaconsfield suffers from being a local recreation ground but had certainly been spruced up since my last visit. The old dressing rooms/clubhouse were gutted by fire quite a few years ago now, but are still visible adjacent to the stand. A new building now stands behind the goal but the low sun made it impossible to capture with the camera unfortunately. Quite a decent burger too. DB.
