Note Shirley Town FC quit the Midland Combination in 2002, but when I visited in 2005 the ground was clearly still in use as the groundsman (whose front gate opens out on to the ground behind the near goal) was hard at work. It would appear that only youth and ladies’ teams are currently using the ground [as of November 2006], which is a shame as it is in a pleasant rural location in the Birmingham suburbs and only 100 yards from Whitlock’s End railway station.
As Colin Peel notes in his West Midlands Guide (1996), the ground was originally home to Westphalians FC, who subsequently became Shirley Athletic in 1972. An amalgamation with another Shirley Town club came in 1974 when the ground was first developed to any degree. DB
