Note Although an earlier incarnation of the club, formed in the early part of the last century, is thought to have played on the Cricket Club ground, Ripon City AFC was formed following the Great War, in 1919 with the amalgamation of the city’s two clubs: Ripon United FC & Ripon City FC, and has always played on its current ground at Mallorie Park. One of the first projects undertaken after this merger was the erection of the stand. This was built in 1920 and is still in use today.

In May 1962 a decision was taken to purchase the ground and in August 1977 Harrogate District Council approved plans for a new clubhouse and changing rooms, both of which remain in use. However in 1981, the rapid growth of the club saw plans for a new shower block approved.

1990 saw a further amalgamation with Ripon Yorkshire Magnets FC (formerly Ripon YMCA), and at the beginning of the 1991/92 season the same of the club was changed to reflect this new club.

Although the City of Ripon is better known for its racecourse, it is perhaps surprising that it does not have a football club playing at a higher level of the Non League Pyramid. Having said that Mallorie Park is a very good venue for the level that the current club is at: with a permanent rail and dugouts, clubhouse, and stand. The latter looked in need of some attention at the time of my visit, and was definately feeling its 80-odd years (not helped by being at the mercy of local undesirables). Recent photographs on the club website however, appear to suggest that some remedial work has been undertaken. DB
