Note Heavitree United FC was formed in 1885 and played on various pitches in Heavitree Park until WW2. At that time Wingfield Park was part of a large estate, and was bequeathed to the Social Club. During the War, the field was occupied by United States servicmen, and the Royal Artillery also played polo on it.
The pitch has since been rotated by 45 degrees, and the only cover is provided by the wooden stand on the far touchline. This was erected with the help of club man Harry Wood and named after him in 1970. Photographs over the years show that it has undergone numerous superficial transformations. These are mainly in the form of paint, although as can be seen from one of the photographs, the fascia on the roof has also been altered subtly. In 2004 United amalgamated with Heavitree Social Club FC and the word ‘Social’ was incorporated into the name to reflect this, albeit not evident on the stand when these photographs were taken DB
