Note The address, club nickname, and stand fascia are all evidence of Athletic’s former guise as Heather St. Johns FC, founded in 1949 and named after the local church. The club formerly played at Swepstone Road but being owned by the local Council, it proved difficult to upgrade it sufficiently to meet the Saints’ ambitions. In September 1993 the club purchased a field and gradually developed the site into the pleasant, well-cared for venue that is St. John’s Park today. Foodlights’ were installed in February 1997 with a game against Leicester City to commemorate the occasion. A seated stand bisects the half-way line on the far side of the pitch whilst players enter underneath a very smart gabled arch in between the two dugouts. DB |
