Note   The earliest record of football in the midlands town of Atherstone was in 1887 when friendly matches were organised prior to the forming of local leagues in 1894. The original Atherstone Town FC joined the Southern League in 1973, finishing as runners-up. Sadly however, the club was forced into liquidation in the summer of 1979.

As is so-often the case (thankfully) a group of local enthusiasts managed to fulfil the teams reserve league fixtures in the West Midlands League as Atherstone United, and in 1987 the new club won promotion back to the Midland Division of the Southern League, before history repeated itself and in September 2005, the club was once again liquidated. Yet again, another phoenix arose from the ashes, and a new Atherstone Town FC was formed, playing at the original club’s Sheepy Road ground. DB

NB. As you may be able to see, these pics were taken during the ‘United’ years.
